The last two weeks have witnessed some crazy violence across India because of a controversial bill and a citizen’s registry promoted by the Indian Government. I wonder why there was such mindless violence from both sides — on one side, the police brutally thrashed students at Jamia Milla University in Delhi and on the other side, the protestors stoned a group of policemen caught in a narrow opening in Ahmedabad. Who is right and who is wrong?
CAA is good:
The citizenship amendment act is good. I welcome it. It will give a state to hundreds of thousands of people who left their countries to seek refuge in India. So, essentially it is an act that will give stateless people a state. It must have been such a big relief for those people who are waiting in refugee camps for years.
CAA is not good:
While I welcome CAA wholeheartedly, I realize that this act is only for people who come from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Also, it is only for people who belong to any religion other than Islam. Even then, I feel happy for the people who are going to get nationality.
CAA in its current form is extremely unfavorable to the following -
- A lot of people, who don’t practice Islam, will not get refugee status even after spending more than 20 years in India. They will not get nationality because they came from Sri Lanka or other countries. The government claims that persecuted minorities need to be given preference. There is no one who is more persecuted than the Tamils in Srilanka.
- A lot of people, who practice Islam, will not get Indian nationality even though they lived here for such a long time. Even Islamic minorities like Ahmadiyas and Shias have been persecuted in Pakistan. Why should they be left out?
At the end of the day, humanity is suffering. Let’s help everyone.
