A 9km walk to eat ice creams

Yesterday, my son asked me whether we could eat ice creams. As a family, we are very conscious of our calories and he had not eaten ice cream in a long time.

I thought about it and said ‘Why not?”.

He got super excited and asked his sister also to join. She also got excited.

I said ‘Lets go for a lunch buffet. We can have a lunch and you both can eat ice creams’.

They thought it was a great idea.

At that moment, I presented the means to the end — to walk 9kms to the restaurant which is on the other side of the border in France. I expected them to offer some resistance but they both liked the suggestion. You can check out the walk in the video below.

We started at 11:15 and reached the restaurant around 13:20. The kids had a sumptuous meal along with some ice creams. They earned their meal and they could eat without any calorie guilt.

If we had driven to the restaurant, it would have been a normal lunch. But walking made it a special experience and gave a life long memory that we will not forget for the rest of our lives.

It took 2 hours but I would do it again without blinking my eye. One of my goals this year is to do a 30km walk once a month and before the end of the year, walk to Lausanne which is 63 kms away from our place. I had done two 30 kms walks in 2022 and then stopped it. This walk gave me the confidence and a beautiful memory to offer inspiration to kick off the walking journey for 2025.

Walking is such an underrated physical and creative activity. It heals both the body and the mind. Walking by Henry David Thoreau was one of the finest books that I read last year. Thoreau best summarized ‘walking’ through the quote below
